A Danish is a super tasty breakfast or brunch option and is always a welcome addition at my house. I love them for the flavor and the fact that they are such a pretty presentation. My absolute favorite version is this Shortcut Blueberry Cream Cheese Danish that I am sharing with you today.

As you might know, Publix makes several types of Danish that you can grab from the bakery. These are always great in a pinch…but my homemade version just can’t be beat. The combination of the flaky pastry with sweetened Arla Skyr Cream Cheese and the tangy blueberry is a fantastic way to start your day.

My shortcut version of this recipe uses puff pastry so there is not a lot of effort needed. Just pull from the freezer, let it thaw, cut into squares and then score the dough. Heck, if you are really short on time you can make a large Danish and cut into servings once baked. I personally prefer the individual servings as they are easy to grab and look so cute.

I like the combination of blueberries with the cream cheese filling…but you could really do any fruit that you prefer. My recipe calls for fresh fruit, but you can also use frozen if needed. Simply cook down with a little sugar and you are in business!

Of course the star of the show is that cream cheese filling. That creamy goodness is what ties together the pastry and fruit  for a taste that you just can’t beat.

I like to use Arla Skyr Cream Cheese in this recipe. It starts with the classic Arla cream cheese recipe and introduces Skyr, an Icelandic-style yogurt, into the mix, resulting in a great-tasting Icelandic cream cheese spread that’s naturally higher in protein and lower in sugar and fat than their Original Cream Cheese.

Feel free to make this recipe your own. Look for these delicious flavors of Arla Cream Cheese in the dairy aisle at your local Publix:

  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons water, divided
  • 1- 2 teaspoon milk
  • 1 egg
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400º F.
  2. Roll out puff pastry slightly and cut into 12 – 16 equal sized rectangles.
  3. Use a knife or pastry cutter to score a rectangle into each puff pastry piece about 1/2 inch from the edge, making sure not to cut through the dough.
  4. Place onto a parchment lined pan and set aside.
  5. Add the blueberries, granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon of water to a small pan and cook over medium for about 5 minutes until berries have cooked down and are softened.
  6. In a medium bowl, combine Arla Skyr Cream Cheese, 1/4 cup of powdered sugar and vanilla extract – mix until smooth and creamy.
  7. To assemble the Danish, add a tablespoon of cream cheese filling over the scored area of the puff pastry.
  8. Top with about a teaspoon of the cooked berries.
  9. Whisk together the egg and remaining teaspoon of water.
  10. Brush the outside 1/2-inch border of each Danish with the egg wash.
  11. Cook for 12 – 15 minutes or until pastry is golden brown.
  12. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
  13. While cooling, make the glaze by gradually adding milk to 1/4 cup of powdered sugar until thin enough to drizzle.
  14. Drizzle over each pastry and serve.
