Reminder – IHeartPublix.com Birthday Celebration – Win $500
April 25, 2012
As I told you yesterday…It is IHeartPublix.com’s 3rd birthday. I love having the opportunity to hang out with you guys every day. I can’t even begin to count how many wonderful emails I have received over the past three years from you guys. Some emails made me smile ear to ear and some made me cry like a baby. There are a few that touched my heart and even a few that made me a bit grumpy–tee hee!
One of my favorite things about hanging out with you guys is the sense of community. You guys let me gush about my highs and lows, about my kids, what I make for dinner and even what I buy at the store. I feel like I have millions of friends that I just happen to have never actually met
I love that many of you are willing to help out a fellow couponer, share your information as well as your stories. So many times when a person asks a question here on the site…I can sit back as you all have taken the time to answer. This means so much to me. I barely have time in the day to get half of my to do list done…so knowing that there are so many folks willing to give a helping hand is such a relief!
Like I told you yesterday, I am giving away a $500 Publix gift card to one I Heart Publix reader as a way to celebrate. There are so many people who keep this site going everyday and I appreciate all of you!! Every day through Friday (4/27) I am going to post an opportunity to enter the giveaway. That means you will have up to four chances to win.
Click the Twitter share button and let everyone know that you are ready to win some free money from IHeartPublix.com then to enter the giveaway complete THIS FORM. I would love to read any comments you guys have but make sure to enter via the form as comments on this post will not be included in the giveaway!
Happy Birthday IHeartPublix.com – Win $500
April 24, 2012
Time really does fly when you are having fun!
It is hard to believe that it was three years ago I got a wild hair to sit down and begin this website. I was looking for a way to avoid having to email my friends every time I found a good deal or coupon. I figured it would be easier to put everything in once place for them to check out when they had time. I would have never imagined that attempt to save me time would turn into this.
I love being able to share deals with you guys and am in awe that so many of you guys choose to visit me each day! While I started out sharing deals with a few friends these days millions of you guys visit each month! I also noticed that the I Heart Publix Facebook page has over 80,000 fans. Seriously I am in amazement. I guess that I am not the only one who really likes shopping at Publix – tee hee!
I want to thank all of you guys who make this site so much fun!! This has become a wonderful community of folks and I am so proud to be part of the fun!! So how about a giveaway to celebrate.
I am going to give one reader a $500 Publix gift card. Knowing you guys I am pretty sure most of you can stretch that to cover at least a month’s worth of groceries (many of you could stretch that to cover multiple months!!)
Every day through Friday (4/27) I am going to post an opportunity to enter the giveaway. That means you will have up to four chances to win.

1. Jennifer says:
I love to get ready for my shopping trip in the family room spending time with my kids. I hate to LUG the file cabinet back and forth. I keep all my inserts in a milk crate standing up. What can I use to store them that would not such an eyesore. I want to keep them in the family room.
I do something very similar in our den where my husband and son usually gather in the evening. As you know (hence the milk crate) it’s essential to keep your papers and files organized as you move from room to room.
Items that can serve as containers, but are light and portable are what you want to look for. And, chances are you have options already in your home. Here are some ideas: a tote bag, boxes, baskets, trays are all good items to consider. Two personal faves are 1) a heavy-duty canvas boating bag. They hold their shape, are easy to carry/move around the house and can fit various sized files, catalogs, and magazines. #2) trays. I have a collection of tole trays which I use through-out my house, and have two designated for mail, catalogs and bills to pay. Most everyone has a tray (or a shallow basket) in their home, which they can put to good use. They are a great way to organize and transport! Other items to think about are vintage locker baskets, new or vintage baskets, and even a shoebox covered with paper or fabric. All make for great, lightweight organizers that you can transport from one room to another.
2. Stephanie says:
My design dilemma is that all of our paint in our house is white along with all of our cabinets and doors. The house was built 18 years ago, and back then that was the fresh style. Everything is so plain and blah, and we always joke saying that the only time of the year our house looks really good is when our holiday decorations our up! I know that we need to add color to our walls and maybe even cabinetry, but we do not want every wall of every room to be the same color. What is the best way to choose a paint color scheme that will brighten up our house but allow some contrast among our different rooms? We do have an open floor plan with one really large dining room when you first walk in that leads right to our kitchen, so what ever we choose does need to go together somewhat. Please help us come up with an idea to brighten up the walls and rooms of our house.
Good news, paint is an easy and affordable way to transform a room. You can begin slowly transforming the interior walls, see how you like adding in color and then go full steam ahead.
First, take a look at the overall space in your house. Where do you spend the most time? Which rooms have the best natural light? Where do you like to hang out? Do you have a lot of wall art? This is important as you think about color selection for your home. Since your home is currently all white, you might consider adding softer, neutral colors to your transitional spaces, like your foyer, hallways, and or stairways. This will define the space, create definition, and not over commit you to too much color. For your primary rooms, consider painting one wall a contrasting color. This will draw the eye to a specific area, define the architecture of the room, add warmth, and create a design element. Select your color based on your furnishings and or accessories as well as colors you gravitate to. And, consider the lighting in the room. Is it dark, filled with natural light, best in candle light? This will help you with your selection. Be sure to paint a swatch on the wall to see how you like the color over several days. When selecting your colors, think about complimentary colors that create a natural progression in your home.
3. Amber says:
My biggest design dilemma is I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old, and they have tons of toys. I want to keep them organized and find ways to help teach them how to organize. What are some tips for organizing toys in a unique, fun way to help my girls?
Baskets, baskets, baskets…I am a big believer (and user) of baskets for toys. I went through this with my son…the toys seemed never ending.
Here’s what I like about baskets (& metal containers). First, they are easy to find and purchase. There are great ones on the market regarding color and texture in all price ranges. (You can also use large plastic storage containers with lids.) Have your children help pick them out and or label them. Get the kids involved. Second, they help your kids be organized by having them be part of the process of cleaning up. Get the children thinking “sort and store.” This way they know what goes where—no excuses. And, generally, kids love to help. Putting things in their place gives them a sense of accomplishment, and gives you a more organized room!
I also am a big fan of hanging jewelry bags or hanging shoe bags. These are great for craft storage (trims, glue sticks, felt, scissors, etc). You can label each section, which will be fun for your girls and you can move them around your house depending on where the girls are crafting or playing.
4. Pat says:
My kitchen is so very small. Is there any way to utilize the space I DO have so that I have more room for cooking?
Here are several ideas to consider, that I did myself when I loved in a tiny NYC apartment.
- Get a cutting board that extends over your kitchen sink. This will give you instant added countertop surfaces for cutting or serving.
- Use a rolling cart with shelves. I liked to put my small kitchen appliances on a cart. For example, all of your breakfast related items go on the cart: coffee maker, toaster, cups, spoons, etc.
- Declutter your countertops and cabinets. Assess what you use regularly and what you use once or twice a year. For those items that are used only once or twice, consider getting rid of them or store under your sofa. This way you will make room for the things you use daily and weekly.
- Look into some great space saving components: cup hooks mounted under a cabinet for cups, a spice rack or towel holder mounted on the wall. They do wonders to open up a space and stay organized.
5. Gwenn says:
My house was built out of pocket on a tight budget in ’97 and has had little done other than painting in some rooms. What are some inexpensive design ideas to make it look more up to date? There are borders that I know are dated but not sure how to remove them. Also, how can I make it feel more open like the newer homes?
Here are some time and money saving ideas for you to consider as you update your home:
- Change out the hardware on your kitchen or bathroom cabinets. Knobs are the jewelry for cabinets and there are many affordable options on the market. You can also consider spray-painting your knobs. Be sure to take them off the cabinets and spray in a well-ventilated area.
- Layer your floor with an extra rug. Add a larger sisal rug to your oriental or wool rug. You’ll have instant texture and warmth.
- Add molding to the space: a crown molding, picture rail, new taller baseboards, or even a cornice box to your windows. This will create architectural definition and scale.
- Reduce clutter. Keep the space unified and simple. Don’t let furniture and accessories block the view or flow of the room. Try to have one area for your books and entertainment. Move your furniture around so not everything is against the wall. Many people do this in small spaces; they put their sofas and chairs against the wall. This actually makes a space feel tighter. Try floating your chairs or sofa.
- Hang a mirror to reflect the space. And, consider a tall mirror (5-6 feet) to lean against the wall (make sure you have it properly anchored).
- Think about light cool colors for the space. Paint your trim the same as your wall colors but in a different finish.
