Yearly Totals 1/3 – Share Your Savings

2e8b4520121ba9564b8cbbbca3e0223e Yearly Totals 1/3 Share Your SavingsHappy 2014!

I have been working on my 2014 budget all week long. I have a pretty in depth system and break down our spending into many categories. I have found that it is very helpful to see where we are spending our money. For that, detailed categories give me the most information. Instead of a general auto budget we have 5 different categories just for our vehicles – fuel, routine maintenance, emergency, insurance and saving for new vehicle. I know it may seem like overkill to some, breaking it down makes it seem more manageable and I can easily see any overspending.

At the beginning of the year I can assign a budget to each category based on previous years’ data. I make modifications based on previous info and any upcoming “big” purchases. As an example – I will need a new car at some point soon. My car is about to hit 100k miles. Now that doesn’t mean we will be buying a car tomorrow but I will need one at some point soon. I have been saving for a new car for over 5 years now. This year I will funnel more money into my “new vehicle” fund in case we need the car sooner than expected. If my car remains reliable we don’t lose anything by saving. If I have excess funds at the end of the year I can always distribute the “excess” to another area. That’s the great thing about saving money…you can never save too much!

In 2013 I spent a total of $2217.04 or an average of $42.64 per week on groceries. I was slightly over the $2080 budget I aim for…but – I still consider it a very successful year. While my overage percentage is very small I have decided to increase my spending to $2750 per year (or an average of $52/wk). I am hoping that the extra money gives me some flexibility and I am hoping will allow me to reduce my stress a little bit. I have decided that the extra money doesn’t mean that I get to slack off. I will still shop the sales and plan my meals based on my inventory and the super deals. The extra money will allow me to re-build my stockpile and get extras for the boys each week.

I know some will ask what I use for budgeting. I personally like Quickbooks software. Now, it’s not cheap. I just looked and it’s $179 at Amazon. It’s not something you have to buy every year and mine is a much older version and works like a champ. Before I was married I used Quicken and it works great as well…plus it’s only $45.

I like being able to connect my bank to the accounting software. Since I am always online, I can enter transactions daily -making it so easy to maintain. No matter what you use – I would just encourage you to keep track of your spending. Whether you track it in a software program, an excel spreadsheet or via the envelope system, staying on top of your spending could mean the difference in overspending or massive savings in 2014.

If you are looking for tips to get out of debt, I know many folks who swear by the Dave Ramsey books/plan. He has some great suggestions. While I don’t agree with 100% of his views his plan does work if you follow it.

Here’s hoping we all have a great 2104 with lots of savings!

So let’s hear how you did in 2013. Share your yearly totals (or weekly totals) in the comments or link up below.

Happy 2014 – What Are You Budgeting For?

Happy 2014 What Are You Budgeting For?

Happy New Year! It’s really hard to believe that it’s 2014. Last year was a busy year for us as we moved to a new state. We are enjoying Tennessee but I still have lots of unpacking and organizing to do.

One of my goals is to get everything out of my garage and put where it is supposed to go. I really want to have it done by the end of January…so I better get busy!

Today I am also taking the time to revisit our budget and get everything set up for 2014. I have been tracking our spending in various categories for many years now and budget a certain amount for the entire year. Now I know this may not work for everyone but it’s worked great for us. Today is the day that I look to see if we were over budget or under budget. Depending on what I see I will either maintain or modify the allotments in each category.

For several years now I have been able to feed my crew for about $40 per week. I actually have $2100 in my grocery budget for the entire year. Last year I added an organic produce delivery service that was on top of that amount. I have not found a similar option since we have moved but have had some success at the Chattanooga Market and even received some great produce from friends and neighbors. I am considering doing some small gardens this year now that I have the space. I just have to determine if I can add the maintenance into my routine each week. I know it’s not a ton of effort but I am stretched thin as it is.

With all of that – plus the fact that my boys are getting bigger, I am considering modifying my budget to $50 – $75 per week. Now I know that doesn’t sound like a ton of money but, it’s a pretty substantial increase.

I am struggling with the decision for many reasons. I have made a list of the pros and cons but am still not completely sure what I will do. Here’s how my brain works….

If I allow myself the extra money I will not work as hard to save…BUT…I am so busy I need to cut myself some slack and reduce my stress.

My boys are getting bigger, eating more and have many more requests…BUT…they are still young and need to understand that you don’t always get what you want. They get plenty of healthy food while so many other kids do not.

I could go on and on…it seems that I can answer every reason to modify with a reason why I shouldn’t. Wish me luck with my decision.

While I am making my decisions I thought I would see what you guys have planned this year. Any of you guys care to share your budget or goals for the new year. Are you budgeting for a large purchase, to pay off debt or just to trying to make ends meet? I think it’s nice to hear from other like minded folks. So what’s your budget and what are you saving for?
