Laurie over at Passionate Penny Pincher has a some great recipes that will be perfect for your Memorial Day dinner. You can't go wrong with Grilled Kansas City Style Spare Ribs. I may have to rethink my menu after seeing some of her recipes ;-)
This week, the USDA confirmed that 145 degrees F as measured on a food thermometer, followed by a three-minute rest time, is safe internal temperature for pork chops, roasts and tenderloins. This cooking method results in juicy, tender and flavorful pork.
The new temperature recommendation reflects advances in both food safety and the nutritional content of pork in recent years. On average, most common cuts of pork are 16 percent leaner than 20 years ago, and saturated fat has dropped 27 percent. In fact, ounce for ounce, pork tenderloin is now as lean as the leanest type of chicken – a skinless chicken breast.
Pork is such an economical option and it is so versatile!! With Memorial Day coming up, consider putting pork on your party menu. Grilled ribs would be a hit with your guests. If you prefer to enjoy the party away from the barbecue or kitchen, consider cooking a couple of Boston Butt Roasts in your crockpot ahead of time and serve pulled pork sandwiches! This week at Publix, pork spareribs and boston butt are both a fantastic stock up price!!
Some of my best recipes are made with pork and the news of 145 degrees will mean that my dishes come out perfectly--juicy and delicious! What are some of your favorites recipes made with pork??
Ground pork, like all ground meat, should be cooked to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

This week we're going to have the second installment of "I got started couponing because..." and "I knew I was hooked on couponing when..."! There were so many responses to the Casting Call I put out last month that I'm spreading out the responses over a few weeks. Here are the second set of responses that I loved...I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
I got started couponing because and/or I knew I was hooked on couponing when....
I have to tell you that I never really had the desire to coupon, but after I had my second child money started to get really tight, so I started to clip coupons here and there for things that I needed that week. Wasn’t much of a savings but it was something. Then one day I thought "there has to be a better way." I found IHeartPublix.com and thought "this is amazing...now if I can just do what all these other couponers do I will save a lot of money!"
My first trip I saved 50%. Even at saving 50% I was hooked. I told my girlfriend about the site (who is a Walmart devotee) and she tried it. We now have savings wars each week to see who can save more!
I know that I am hooked on couponing because when we are vacationing out of state, I make sure I visit all the grocery stores in the area to see what coupons I can pick up!
I actually stumbled upon couponing during a sleepless 2am TV spurt - I found myself watching extreme couponing at the beginning of January. I thought to myself … is this for real? I got started just to see if it worked.
The moment I fully knew I was addicted was when I made my husband drive around town looking for the $5 off $30 Publix coupons that were on the front of the Tampa Tribune. He told me it was like the biggest Easter Egg hunt ever…driving to find the white boxes that held the magic! :)
Overnight it seemed I was a single mom going through a horrible divorce and had no money and no job. I went to the grocery store and the lady in frount of me bought several hundred dollars of food for a few dollars and I asked her how she did it. She said she used iheartpublix.com. I went on the website and learned all I could learn. I can't explain how good it felt to know I could feed my 3 year old at the time.
I knew I was hooked when I remarried and had money but could not stop saving money!! My husband is my biggest fan. I am teaching my friends to coupon also. Thanks for the lifeline!!
I always “dabbled” in couponing, but a couple of summers ago, I just thought, “lets give this a shot” and I researched, labored and printed….and when I came home day after day after day with my average items costing LESS than $1 each… well…I was hooked. There was a time when money was so tight that the pantry was empty on a regular basis and having a growing boy in our home, I shuddered to think that he would think it was normal to eat mac and cheese from the box night after night….
I love getting freebies, I love being able to give back to our food pantry at church, I love the “thrill of the chase” and most of all, I love not having to wonder “how are we going to eat this week?”
I am retired but my husband continued to work so I had extra time on my hands. I started couponing about one year ago as a challenge to see if it really did work like I had read and also to save some money (why not?). I noticed it was really fun and exciting. It has also helped my memory and amazed my adult children. Now I would never stop and try not to be too pushy with my couponing.
In short, I love it. I have even gotten my husband to be a better shopper and he will sometimes try to “make a deal.”
My mom used to coupon when I was little. She was all about Delchamp’s double and triple coupon days, but when they closed she gave up on her couponing ways. She always taught me to look for the best deal with any shopping, so I’ve always had that idea in the back of my head.
Now that I'm in college, I’ve started working for Publix in customer service. I kept on seeing coupon ladies coming in and saving a whole lot of money, and I was blown away. I befriended them and started asking them questions. A lot of them referred me to local sites and to iheartpublix. Once I realized how many printable coupons and match-ups are out on the internet I was hooked. My customers love when I remind them about a certain coupon when they’re checking out. Sometimes there might be one coupon that got overlooked in their binder, and they appreciate the heads up. It’s just one more way I can help out my customers, and I love it!
I got into couponing when I went to my sister’s house [she's an avid couponer] and noticed that her kitchen, bathroom and garage looked like an aisle at Publix! I knew she was on a tight budget so I asked how she got all this stuff and she opened the world of couponing to me.
I knew I was hooked when I went out in the middle of Tampa’s worst storm in years (on March 31st) because my coupons were expiring and I had to get those great deals!
I saw a saw a show about 5 or 6 years age (long before extreme couponing). A woman was talking about how she saves with coupons, and she said “Coupons are money.” After that I started researching couponing and found a few web sites that explained how to get the most out of a coupon. That is when it became a game to me: if I got it for free, I won!
I knew when I was hooked when one day my husband and I saw the Publix truck turning in to my Publix. I made him take me home so I could get my coupons together right then!
I’ve been couponing for two years now and do very well. I plan trips, spend time organizing and sort, cut and print coupons. I’ve spent hours planning my trips or even run to the store after my children are in bed to get a good deal. But my “I'm hooked moment” just happened when I asked my husband to “like” Bic Soleil Bella razors on Facebook so I could get two more coupons. He must really love me becuase he actually did it! At least I haven’t asked him to like Tampax or Playtex…yet. :)
Happy Thursday, everyone! I'll be back with more of my favorites in a few weeks! Feel free to leave more of your answers to "I got starting couponing because..." and/or "I knew I was hooked on couponing when..." in the comments! :)
