Welcome to this week’s Try Me Tuesday. As a reminder…each week I will grab a new set of products and test them out. I’ll put the Publix brand up against a national brand product and report back.
I know many times I struggle with what brand to choose. Often a sale or a coupon/sale combination make that an easier decision…but what about those times when you need an item and there is not a sale? Do you grab the house brand or pay more and get the national brand? More importantly, is there really a difference?
This week we tried Publix Resealable Snack Bags.
Publix Resealable Snack Bags, 50 ct, 2/$3
Ziploc Resealable Snack Bags, 40 ct, $2.79
I am on a roll trying out things that aren’t food…this week I decided to test Publix Resealable Snack Bags.
I will start by saying that I am a big fan of Ziploc bags and always have been. They are the brand that I buy almost 100% of the time with the occasional purchase of maybe Glad when they are at a super low, can’t-miss price. I had never had a reason to try the Publix version as I typically stock up on Ziploc bags with a sale/coupon combo.
Now there was no way to really do a blind test of these so I did my best in testing all all the “features” to try to see which was best in my opinion.
The bags are the same size and will hold the same amount. But, you do get 10 more bags per box with the Publix version. So at regular price you pay 3¢ per bag for the Publix bags and about 7¢ per bag for the Ziploc brand bags.
I can’t say that I ever really pay attention to the closure or check my Ziploc bags to see that the pink and blue colors really combine to make the purple color. I usually just go by feel. The Publix bags are completely clear so if you depend on the color change that might be something to note. Both were fairly easy to close and I did feel like the closure was really about the same for both. I put food in the bag and closed both with no issue. I even blew air into each bag, closed them and pushed to try to pop it open and they both held up just fine.
BUT–when it came time to open the closed bags…that is when the difference was very obvious. I often had a hard time getting my fingers on each of the two sides of the clear Publix bag to pull it open. The easy open tabs on the Ziploc bag really is an important feature…at least to me.
Obviously I was able to open the Publix bags…but it did take more effort. I often had to stop, stick my nail in to separate the sides and then split the opening to get a good grip and pull the bag open. It wasn’t difficult…just annoying. I could see it being an issue for an older person or on the opposite end…a small child trying to open their lunch items.
If you are used to the easy open tabs (like me) you will probably miss them when using the Publix version. I definitely prefer the Ziploc bags and will continue to stock up when we have a sale/coupon combo.
So have you tried them? Did you have a preference?
