Welcome to this week’s Try Me Tuesday. Each week I will grab a new set of products and test them out. I’ll put the Publix brand up against a national brand product and report back.
I know many times I struggle with what brand to choose. Often a sale or a coupon/sale combination make that an easier decision…but what about those times when you need an item and there is not a sale? Do you grab the house brand or pay more and get the national brand? More importantly, is there really a difference in taste?
This week the boys chose the item. I thought we had done this one before but instead it was the crescent rolls that we had tried out.

RESULTS
- Publix – 3
- Pillsbury – 5
We had some guests over the weekend so it was a great time to try these out. As you can see there were mixed reviews. I can’t say that the Pillsbury won by a landslide but it did get the most votes.
I tried both and honestly, they were both very tasty. I was the one who prepared the rolls and I can tell you that the Publix package required you to peel the paper off twice to get it open BUT I loved that I could squeeze out the icing. The Pillsbury icing required a knife to spread it from a little tin.
Now from a price standpoint, the Pillsbury will almost always be cheaper as they are on sale constantly with a coupon. But in the case when they weren’t on sale, I would definitely grab the Publix version. They were delicious and I really did like how easy it was to add the icing at the end!! Ultimately the Pillsbury was the winner at my house for the taste test but I think you’d be safe grabbing either!
Have you guys tried both? Which did you prefer?
As a household that cannot have many Pillsbury products due to allergies (Soybean Oil), I will say that our kids never noticed a difference when we went to the Publix brand. They are both very excited when we make these, and there are never any left. :-) For the price point with allergy sensitive kids they can’t be beat!
Are the Publix ones really have 10X the sodium than the Pillsbury?????
HA–no that was a typo!! All fixed :-)
I’m glad to see this comparison. Cinnamon rolls are my weakness. I agree about the sodium count on the Publix brand though – wow that’s high!
I’ve tried both and have to say that they are both good. I’m not going to turn down a cinnamon roll! I agree about the squeeze-on icing, too. The little cup the Pillsbury icing comes in is such a sticky mess.
The icing for the publix brand was absolutely disgusting as it had a funny taste. Never again will I buy this brand.
We definitely prefer the Publix brand to the other. However, Publix has stopped carrying these. Do you know what company actually manufactures them and/or for wat other store so we can look there?
