I think that we have done this one before but it’s been a while and I have had a couple of folks email so I figured I’d throw this one out again. What would you say to someone asking –
How much do you budget each week for groceries – including food, baby, h&b, paper products, etc? I think I spend too much and can’t understand how some folks spend under $100 per week. I am lucky if I can keep my bill under $150 each week!!
I definitely want to hear what you guys say but here’s my answer…
Budgets are very personal. Every person has wants and needs and they vary DRAMATICALLY! Folks with larger families will spend more money. Folks with babies will typically have to spend more money. Folks with food sensitivities and allergies will often spend more money. Never compare your savings based on totals you see posted online! All of us shop very differently and you should never think that you are not doing a good job.
I try to average around $50 per week. That’s actually an increase from what I was spending over the last couple of years. That amount will not work for everyone –but it works for me. Notice that I said average. Some weeks I spend less and other weeks I spend much more. I also may categorize differently that other folks. I had someone ask me if I ever bought beer, liquor or wine and why they never saw it on my totals list. I do occasionally buy alcohol – not often…but I do enjoy a good margarita every now and again 😉 For me, that comes from my entertainment budget. Those items are not necessities so if I don’t have the budget for it…I don’t buy it! I also get creative when it comes to food. We eat what I have on hand and I create shopping lists based on my inventory. I also am lucky that I have neighbors who bring me huge baskets of blueberries, parents who grow a huge garden each year, credit with Zaycon so I can keep my freezer stocked with meats and also get fun boxes from companies who want to share new products for me to try. With all of that I have the ability to average around $50 per week. I bet to some folks that seems like seems like overkill. Many people do amazing things with budgets half that amount. I think the key is finding what works best for you. If you think you are spending too much, challenge yourself to cut your spending by 5%, 10% or even 15%. I think you’d be amazed at what some creative budgeting can do!
Now, I want to hear from you guys. What do you spend each week? You might also considering sharing how you shop and how many people you shop for. I think we will see that everyone shops very differently!
