Save More with the $1 Children’s Advil coupon in the 1/29 paper (also in 12/11 RP or over on RedPlum). She purchased 3 bottles for $9 and will submit the Pfizer $10 mail in rebate from the 1/29 inserts!

So, she will get  3 bottles of Children’s Advil and earn a few cents after the cost of her stamp! I am going to check my supply of  Advil. This is something you always want to have on hand if you have kiddos. No one wants to be out when you need it! I might need to do this deal as well!

I can tell you firsthand that living the life of a couponer is difficult but it is also super rewarding. Rather than focus on the negatives, I thought it might be nice to open up a discussion about the positive things about being a couponer.

I often have to remind myself – everything is perspective. I may not be a multi-millionaire but I can pay my bills and still have money to spare. I don’t drive a big fancy Mercedes Benz but I do have a very dependable car that gets me where I need to be. I am not a super model who wears a size 0 but I do have a wonderful husband and 2 great little boys who love me dearly even though I’ll never walk the runway in Paris.

As you can see by my exaggerated examples, sometimes it is best to focus on what we DO have and what we CAN do rather than let the negatives rule our world.

In an attempt to help us think about all the great things about being a smart shopper, I thought it would be nice to share some of the good things about couponing. It can be anything – share your favorite tip, the best deal you ever got, what you do with your extra money, anything at all…just keep it positive!

You guys know I am a huge avocado fan. I have shared with you some of my favorite guacamole recipes and even a fun salad that my 5 year old.

I am trying to eat healthier as part of my new year’s resolution. Since avocados provide nearly 20 essential nutrients, they are a delicious part of my diet! You can dice them for a salad or slice them for a sandwich. I like to mash my avocado with a little lime juice and use it as a spread. It adds the perfect touch to a turkey sandwich with tomatoes–YUM!

I love to use these and bought several packs a while back. I think I may print and hang on to these in hopes of a sale. The 4 count are currently $3.99 at Publix. I’ll need them to go down a bit before I grab them!

1.Hope wants to know: I shop at Publix regularly and have been couponing for 4 months. I stack..check ads, etc. But I can’t seem to get below the $100 mark. I feel like I am spending more since I am trying to build a stockpile. This week I saved $144. 48 – $62 of that was coupons and $81 in store pricing. When will this couponing balance out?

Michelle: My standard answer would be – as you learn the sales and being to fill your pantry, your totals will naturally go down. You will be able to devote more of your budget to getting the super deals and stocking your pantry.

If you really want to shake it up a little bit consider doing something totally different. Give yourself a 10% challenge. If you are currently spending $100 per week – this week limit yourself to spending no more than $90! Inventory your pantry and your fridge. Make a list of the bare basics that you need to cover the meals for your family for the week. Make sure you create a meal plan and base your meals only on what you have on hand and supplement with only what is on sale. If at all possible, use at least 30% of your budget to grab the super deals and stock up on things that may not be used immediately.

I bet you will find that gradually reducing your budget is not really that hard. When you are comfortable at a 10% discount try reducing your spending by 15% and so on until you hit your goal.

Now you may have to be creative with your menus but I am confident that you can do it. Sometimes all you need it to challenge yourself.

Christy: The key to really saving money through couponing is stockpiling, so you’re totally doing the right thing already. When I first started out about a year and a half ago, I saved (at best) maybe 25% because I was still buying all our ‘staples’ – meat, produce, paper goods, personal items, dry goods like rice and pasta, dairy like milk and butter products, etc – every week (in addition to the great sale items). Over time, though, as I built my stockpile, my totals went down and stayed down.

As you’re working to get your totals down, too, keep in mind how much you USED to spend on your weekly grocery trip – a savings like $145 is nothing to sneeze at!

2. MB wants to know: This may be the dumbest question ever, bow do I print the actual coupon from your site? I checked the ones I wanted and hit print list and it just printed a list of the items I checked, but not the coupons themselves. What am I doing wrong?

Michelle: Printable coupons will have an underline and are a different color than the other text (typically red or green). Here is an example: PRINTABLE COUPON.  Often I modify the color to red or green to indicate whether the coupon is a manufacturer’s coupon or a store coupon. If there is no single underline then it is not a printable coupon.

The printable list feature on the ads are just a basic shopping list of items you wish to purchase at the store.

Christy: To print the coupons themselves, you need to click on the individual coupons that you want. Each underlined coupon is a link to the site where you can find and print that coupon. Then once you have the coupons you need, you can print your list.

3. Dutch wants to know: Can I still use coupons with food stamps? I am 100% disabled and every penny really counts. I just found out about your site from lady in line in front of me. For the first time in my life I was happy to be stuck behind the “Coupon lady” as I learned a lot. We chatted for a half hour while she bought 200 dollars worth of groceries for $73.71, blew me away. I couldn’t believe my eyes. After she left cashier told me she comes in twice a month and does this. Wow, I am so in – I just need to know about the EBT’s.

Michelle: Yes, you can absolutely use coupons with food stamps! Now I will admit that I do not know all the details about tax as it will vary by state… but coupons will help you stretch the food stamp funds even farther.

I know someone will correct me if I am wrong…but Food Stamps are a means of payment so any coupons used will reduce the amount you pay from your EBT. I have heard that you need separate food and non food items to ensure that what you pay out of pocket is as low as possible. An example of this is that store coupons come off the total and may apply to the food items in your cart. Since the food stamps are covering the food, you would rather have a $5/$30 eat up some of the cost of paper towels or other non-food items that you will have to pay for out of pocket.

4. Kareen wants to know: I have a Publix couponing question that I really hope you can help me with. Yesterday, when checking out a Publix, I had an interesting experience. While scanning my coupons, the cashier had a skeptical look on her face and kept putting my Publix coupons aside after already scanning 2 of them. So I had a feeling there was going to be an issue. Anyway, so after she got to the 3rd one, she called over the customer service person and asked if that Publix coupon was in fact a Publix coupon since it had a bar code on the back. The customer service person advised the cashier that the Publix coupons were manufacturer coupons and not Publix coupons since there was a bar code on the back even thought the front of the coupon said Redeemable at Publix Stores only. The coupons were taken from the Simply Delicious Inspirations booklet that were located in the front of the store.

Now after the customer service person told the cashier the coupons were not actual Publix coupons, she then voided the first 2 that she initially scanned and I ended up only using my other manufacturer coupons or the coupon with the highest discount value for my items. I told the cashier until now, I never had an issue with Publix coupons before as I have used plenty of the same types of Publix coupons and many of them were stacked with manufacturer coupons with no problems.

Was this correct? are these coupons that say Redeemable at Publix Stores only supposed to be considered as a manufacturer coupon and not a store coupon?

Michelle: You definitely have to look closely at the coupon. Publix store coupons don’t usually have a bar code and instead have a LU number. There are the occasional Publix coupons with a barcode. In that case the barcode will begin with another number other than 5 or 9 (these are rare – most Publix coupons have the LU number).

5. Mandy wants to know: I printed off a few coupons that I was very excited about. This deal was going to be a money maker, so I was SUPER excited. When I was cutting out the coupons I accidentily cut the expiration date off, ACK!! I was pretty upset, then I go the idea…since it was a printed coupon, perhaps I could tape the coupon back together and make a copy it. I then threw the original one away and used the copy. Is there anything wrong with that? I threw the original one that I printed away, so I never used it.

Christy: Even though I understand the reason you copied the coupons, I am still REALLY hesitant to tell anyone that it’s ok to copy a coupon EVER. What I might do instead is just tape the coupon back together and take the taped coupon to my customer service desk and explain the situation. If they said it was ok to take the coupons, great, if not…it’s not the end of the world. I’m sure that some of the commenters might have a different take – I’m interested to hear what everyone else has to say!

Michelle: I personally would have taped the coupon but I honestly think it is not that big of a deal to create a new original (as long as the other coupon was destroyed). Keep in mind that if the coupon was not a perfect copy, you will subject yourself to possible scrutiny at checkout even though you had good intentions.
