Try Me Tuesday – Publix Hummus

January 28, 2014

publix hummus Try Me Tuesday Publix Hummus

Welcome to this week’s Try Me Tuesday. Each week I will grab a new set of products and test them out. I’ll put the Publix brand up against a national brand product and report back.

I know many times I struggle with what brand to choose. Often a sale or a coupon/sale combination make that an easier decision…but what about those times when you need an item and there is not a sale? Do you grab the house brand or pay more and get the national brand? More importantly, is there really a difference in taste?

Jimmy emailed and suggested that I do a taste test on Publix hummus. Now why didn’t I think of that? You guys who have been hanging out with me for a while already know that I am quite a fan of hummus. I pretty much always have hummus in my fridge…either homemade or Sabra. I really love Sabra and have not strayed because well… I love it and I can usually get it at a great price.

We had to do a blind taste test this week because we would have been able to tell the two apart by looking at it. The Sabra has that signature dollop of deliciousness in the middle. My husband and I fed each other little bites of the two on a pretzel chip.

RESULTS
Sabra – 1
Publix – 1

Yep, it was a tie this week. They were both very tasty but I know my Sabra. It is so smooth and creamy – to me that texture just can’t be beat!  My husband chose the Publix hummus indicating that it had more “flavor”.  If you look at the ingredient list you’ll see that the Publix version has quite a bit more salt so I can see how he came up with that.

I am not calling it a tie this week. I am giving the edge to Sabra. While the regular price of the Sabra is $1 more than the Publix variety, we have sales fairly often that allow us to stock up. With the $1 coupon over on their Facebook page the tubs are just a buck during BOGO sales (like the one we have coming up).

So let’s hear it …have you guys tried both? Which was your favorite?

I like the sabra supremely spicy one but the jalapeño celentro publix brand one is really good too!!!!

  2. Belinda says:

I loved the Sabra Roasted Garlic – all time favorite with Stacy’s Pita Chips, Pretzel Crips, or carrot sticks – Yummy!

  3. Donna says:

I like Sabra and the ingredient list alone would make me choose it over Publix and as you wrote – we often get a god deal.

  4. Donna says:

    Sorry – “good” deal

  5. I like the Sabra ingredient list. Publix brand is ok but it is definitely not the same, texture wise or taste wise.

  6. Judy says:

I like these comparisons you do. :)

  7. Carolyn says:

I try to go with products that have less additive type ingredients and more nutritious ingredients and that makes me choose Sabra. I buy enough when it is on sale to last for a while. The Sabra has long dates on it. I never pay full price.

  8. Afsana says:

When I don’t feel like making my own, Sabra is the only brand I will purchase. I have tried other brands before and have been disappointed in the taste and texture.

  9. Elizabeth says:

Sabra is always fantastic, but I tried the Publix chili lime hummus a few weeks back when it was on sale, and LOVED it. Big win in the flavor department.

  10. Jenn says:

I tried the Black Olive (not sure of exact name) in both brands. Both were very good, however almost every time I buy the Sabra black olive, I bite down on small bits of olive pit which you can’t see (label warns it can happen…but if you can’t see it, the warning doesn’t do much good).

    • Shana says:

Me too Jenn! I know it’s a risk any time you eat olives, but c’mon! I shouldn’t have to weigh the cost of a massive dental bill against my taste buds love of olives & hummus every time I want a snack!
After the 2nd near miss, I contacted Sabra through their website & complained – they apologized via email & also mailed out a stack of coupons. I think they appreciated the feedback, and I appreciated the coupons ~ and I avoid the olive version now… if I want the olive-y goodness, I add my own!

I was wondering if you would mind sharing your homemade recipe for Hummus.
