Try Me Tuesday – Publix Chicken Broth

chicken broth Try Me Tuesday Publix Chicken Broth

Welcome to this week’s Try Me Tuesday. Each week I will grab a new set of products and test them out. I’ll put the Publix brand up against a national brand product and report back. This week we are going to talk about a product I use several times per week in my kitchen – chicken broth.

I know many times I struggle with what brand to choose. Often a sale or a coupon/sale combination make that an easier decision…but what about those times when you need an item and there is not a sale? Do you grab the house brand or pay more and get the national brand? More importantly, is there really a difference in taste?

Ok now on to the ingredient list:

Publix -
Chicken Stock – contains less than 1% of salt, yeast extract, dextrose, onion powder, celery juice concentrate, carrot juice concentrate, natural flavoring, beta carotene (for color)

Swanson -
Chicken Stock  - contains less than 1% of sea salt, salt, sugar, natural flavoring, dehydrated onions, yeast extract, chicken fat, canola oil, carrots, celery, onions

As you can see they are pretty similar but there are some differences. I decided to taste the broth plain and then used the broths to cook up two batches of rice.

Plain Tasting:

  • Publix – 1
  • Swanson – 1

Rice Tasing

  • Publix – 1
  • Swanson – 3

My husband was the only one who chose the Publix brand as the winner this week. They tasted so similar but there was a slight difference in taste. I could taste more veggie flavor in the Swanson’s broth. Now, I would happily use both and because the price was basically identical, I am going to declare Swanson’s the winner. If a time comes where I have to decide based on price…I would happily use either!

  1. Lana says:

One thing to consider though is that yeast extract is a hidden source of msg so if you are concerned about that then the Publix brand would have a significantly higher amount.

    I love your taste tests!

  3. Cindy says:

If anyone is watching their sodium intake (like me) then notice that Publix is 100mg more than Swanson.

  4. Krystle says:

    I don’t try anything without a coupon
