SignatureSausagePotato copy Hillshire Farm To The Rescue + Enter To Win A $100 Publix Gift CardHillshire Farm to the rescue. At least that is what I was saying this weekend. You guys know I typically take Saturday off as my day out of the kitchen. Last weekend, we had planned to go to my oldest son’s baseball game, run a few errands then hit my favorite Mexican restaurant.

Well, it was so dang cold that the game was canceled and I was not motivated to get out of the house. So, I decided to grab a box of dirty rice mix, slice some Hillshire Farm Smoked Sausage and dinner was on the table in 25 minutes. I really didn’t even feel like I was cooking since I just dumped the rice and the sausage in a pan with a little boiling water. My guys loved it and even cleaned up the mess after dinner. Ok…it was only a pan and the four bowls we used but it was still a nice break for me.

Hillshire Farm To The Rescue + Enter To Win A $100 Publix Gift CardHillshire Farm Smoked Sausage is great to have on hand. It’s ready in your fridge whenever you need a great meal. It makes dinner a breeze and your whole family will love it.

I like to have a couple varieties of the sausage on hand. It is one of my favorite meats to keep in the fridge. The sausage I bought last week is good until the end of May. So it will be there ready to go whenever I need it. I don’t have to worry about remembering to take anything out of the freezer in the morning. Plus, the price can’t be beat especially since we have a great coupon and sale at Publix!

Nothing special about this recipe, but after trying lots of different recipes with smoked sausage it’s still my families favorite. We just call it Sausage Potato Bake. Chop up potatoes, onion, & bell pepper to bite size pieces. Place on an aluminum foil covered baking sheet. Drizzle & toss with olive oil, garlic powder, & black pepper. I never measure those ingredients just season to taste. Slice sausage & add to baking sheet. Cook at 450 degrees for 30 min. Easy peasy comfort food. :) The flavors in this recipe just go together splendidly.

We just used smoked sausage in a low country boil crockpot recipe. Just get a package of Zatarans sp? seafood boil mix in the crockpot with about 8 cups of water and 1 head of garlic cut in half. 2lbs new potatoes with skin on. Cook for 4 hours then throw in the sausage and corn on the cob cut in quarters. Cook for another hour. Then put in one pound of shrimp (shells on and deveined and cook for 30 mins.

  12. Kelley says:

I do jambalya mix with the sausage. We love it.

  13. raluca berger says:

I slice the sausage in about half inch thick slices, put slices in a pyrex, bake them uncovered till they are well heated through. When I remove the pan from oven I sprinkle with chili powder or bbq dry rub spice and toss (You can also grill the sausage whole, then slice up after grilling and toss with seasoning). I put the sausages on a platter with cubes of cheese, dill pickles, peperoncini peppers, and crackers. Makes a great appetizer!

  14. Bill says:

I add sausage to the crockpot with potatoes and bbq sauce, cook it on high for 4 hours and it is great!

  15. john berger says:

I’ve also made the typical hash brown casserole and added slices of the sausages to the casserole for a easy throw together dinner.
Basic Hash brown – sausages casserole recipe:

    * 2 tablespoons green pepper, chopped
    * 1/2 teaspoon salt
    * 1/8 teaspoon pepper
    * 24 ounces frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed
NOTE: I just stir in the sliced sausage to the recipe before cooking. May have to use a larger baking dish.
    Preparation:
Mix soup, milk, sour cream, onion, green pepper, salt, and pepper; stir in potatoes. Pour into an ungreased 8x8x2-inch baking dish. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 50 to 60 minutes.

Big bag of dried the large white lima beans- soaked overnight.
In a crock pot put drained limas, pkg. of Hillshire Farms sausage cut up, some finely chopped onion, salt, pepper and a shake or two of Tony Chachere’s seasoning, add enough water to cover ingredients.(you may need to add alil more water thru out the day cause the beans may still absorb some of the water) Cook on high for about 6-8 hours depending on how hot your crock pot gets. Italian Sausage Bake

    Ingredients:

-1 14oz package of Hillshire Farm smoked sausage, hot italian sausage flavor

    -1 cup Progresso Tuscany Broth

-1 jar Bertolli or Classico sauce, your favorite red sauce flavor.

-1 can Hunts diced tomatoes, basil, garlic & oregano variety

-1 box Mueller’s pasta – rigatoni or penne work best

-1 tablespoon Crisco extra virgin olive oil

-1 package Kraft fresh take Italian Parmesan variety

    -Pam cooking spray

-1 box Texas Toast garlic or cheese toast

    -Talenti Gelato

    Directions:

-Combine jar of sauce, can of Hunt’s diced tomatoes, and cup of Progresso broth in a sauce pot, with any extra seasoning you may want to add. Bring to a simmer and keep on low, stirring occasionally. Let simmer for the duration of the rest of your cooking.

-At the same time, boil your sausage for about 4 minutes. Remove from water and when cool enough, cut in half length-wise, and then into slices.

-In a skillet, heat your olive oil. When hot, add the slices of sausage and cook until barely browned on both sides.

-Cook your pasta according to the box directions, minus one or two minutes. It will finish cooking in the oven.

-Spray a 9×13 (or you could even do a 9×9) baking dish with Pam spray to prevent sticking.

-Combine the sausage, sauce, and pasta in the pasta pot (after draining the water, of course). Pour into baking dish.

-Top with the Kraft fresh take cheese and breadcrumb mixture.

-Bake at 375* for 17-19 minutes, until the top is visibly golden.

-Bake your texas toast at the same time, according to boxed directions.

Remove from oven and serve with your texas toast.

    Have the Gelato for desert!

  50. cj says:

Not sure this counts as a recipe, but our favorite way to cook Hillshire sausage is: brown slices in skillet, remove, in same skillet cook sliced cabbage along with some onion slices. When almost done, to your liking
(we like the cabbage pretty soft, some like it almost crunchy), add the browned sausage back in just to marry the flavors.

The best thing about Hillshire sausage is that you can use it in a lot of recipes, you can make it work with most any food you want to use, or you can eat it alone. mmmmmmm Now I think I need to get MORE sausage to try all the other posted ways of eating it!!!

Once cooled Add into pot you boiled it in

Theres a few favorites like chopping them up in scrambled eggs and cooking them in some bbq sauce as an appetizer but my favorite is a twist on a spanish dish called arooz con salchichas or rice with sausage in the original you use canned vienna sausages.
Basically you sautee chopped onions and tomatoes in some olive oil or butter
then add your rice usually a cup will feed 3 adults in my house lol
stir it so the oil and sofrito mixture coats the rice then you can add in you sliced kielbasa (yum) and a can of tomato sauce water and a packet of Sazon (i use one with achiote and azafran) water and tomato sauce should equal 2 cups combined then you bring to boil and simmer until rice absorbs the yummy flavors and water lol

My daughters favorite is just chopping up the sausage and tossing it with pasta and creamy garlic parmesan ragu.

My husband prefers a spicy jambalaya like the ones above.

  72. Dana Esker says:

    CHEESY GRITS:
2 cups low-sodium chicken stock, plus more if needed
2 cups cream, plus more if needed
    4 tablespoons unsalted butter
    3/4 cup grits or polenta
4 ounces American cheese, torn into pieces
    1/2 cup grated Parmesan
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper

    SAUSAGE, SHRIMP AND PEPPERS:
    3 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound Hillshire Farms pork sausage, cut into 1/4-inch-thick rounds
    4 cloves garlic, minced
1 small orange bell pepper, cut in small dice
1 small red bell pepper, cut in small dice
1/2 Spanish onion, cut in small dice
1 pound uncooked large shrimp, peeled, deveined and cut into thirds
    1/2 cup low-sodium chicken stock
    1 tablespoon unsalted butter
    Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

    DIRECTIONS

For the grits: Bring the chicken stock, the cream and butter to a simmer in a heavy saucepan. Gradually whisk in the grits. Reduce the heat and simmer until the grits have thickened, 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid lumps. Once the grits are thick and creamy, stir in the cheeses and adjust the consistency with stock and/or cream and season with salt and pepper. These grits provide a wonderful bed to soak up the flavor from the sausage, shrimp and veggies.

For the sausage, shrimp and peppers: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet. Add the sausages and brown. Then transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon, leaving all of the fat in the skillet. Add the garlic, bell peppers and onions to the skillet, sprinkle with salt and pepper and saute until tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Add the shrimp and saute until they begin to turn pink, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the reserved sausage and the chicken stock to the skillet and let reduce a bit to intensify those flavors. Stir in the butter at the end and garnish with parsley.
