Reader Spotlight – Changing the Game

January 31, 2013

Reader Spotlight Changing the GameToday’s Reader Spotlight comes to us from Laura. When her husband quit the job he hated to search for his dream job, Laura had to figure out a way to change the way they lived. Take it away, Laura!

When the economy tanked, it was an awful time for a lot of folks. At the time I was living in a prestigious part of the city, in a beautiful 1920′s home, and was totally unaffected by the economic hardships felt by so many. I shopped once a week, spending about $350 on groceries, never shopped sales and just bought what I needed when I needed it. Life just carried on as always for us.

Well, as most people were getting laid off from their jobs, one day my husband came home from his six figure salary job and announced he had quit. I knew he had been unhappy at work for a while, but all I could think was was he crazy?!?! How would we live? How would I shop? Would I be able to still stay at home with my daughter?

We had some small savings to hold us through, but it took three months for my hubby to find another job and we quickly blew through all that. His new job paid about half of his old salary so we decided we had to sell our home and move out of the city to the burbs for finacial reasons. I knew I had to do something to cut down our spending.

That’s when I discovered I Heart Publix. It has changed my life and the way I shop completely. Since all this, my husband has found a job that replaces his old salary. With me couponing and saving, we were able to pay off the small amount of debt we accumulated while he was finding his dream job.

There’s no way we could have done it without I Heart Publix. These days we’re living more cost effectively out of the city, couponing and everyone is happy. The schools are great, hubby loves his job just down the street and me? Well, I love couponing and wonder how I ever lived without it! It’s one of my biggest hobbies! Sometimes the worst and craziest of situations can turn out to be the best thing that could of happened.

Thanks for sharing your story, Laura!

I could really use a few new volunteers for the Reader Spotlight – so please write in if you have a story to tell! Your post can be about almost anything to do with couponing. You can tell us about a particularly good or bad situation you’ve dealt with as a couponer, about how you got into couponing or how couponing has impacted the rest of your life, you can make a list of things every new couponer should know…just about anything, really! If you think it’s interesting and it has to do with couponing, email me with your idea at contactiheartpublix @ gmail.com.

This is one of my favorite features on the site! Be sure and check out all the past Reader Spotlights HERE.

Laura, thanks for sharing from the heart. Yes, I believe whole heartedly that when one door closes it’s because God has something better for us! I went through a similar/different situation but bottom line is that I know that had that door not closed, I wouldn’t have the complete trust in God I have today and have a much better quality of life today. Thanks for your encouragement for others!
