I have a bad habit that when I get hungry, I have a tendency to reach for the boys’ snacks. As a way to make a change, I decided to put a fruit bowl next to the snack canisters on my kitchen counter. As long as I keep the bowl full, I go for  the good stuff! This week I have a bunch of Florida Grapefruits piled up in the bowl – yum!

    I made a lot of grapefruit things this past weekend – grapefruit bars (I simply replaced lemon juice with grapefruit juice and zest in a creamy bar recipe – can of condensed milk, 4 egg yolks and 3/4 C of juice and some zest baked in a crust), candied grapefruit peel (eventually put in cookies) and a grapefruit yogurt cake from Smitten Kitchen (http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2007/01/cake-paradisi/)

    4 large red grapefruit, peeled and sectioned

    4 avocados – peeled, pitted, and sliced

    1/3 cup orange juice

    1/3 cup olive oil

    3 tablespoons lime juice

    2 tablespoons honey

    salt and cracked black pepper to taste

    1.Arrange the grapefruit sections and avocado slices attractively in a shallow serving dish. In a bowl, whisk together the orange juice, olive oil, lime juice, and honey until well combined; drizzle the dressing over the grapefruit and avocado slices. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Serve immediately.

    4 fluid ounces white tequila

    1 fluid ounce orange flavored liqueur (such as Cointreau®)

    2 limes, juiced

    8 fluid ounces grapefruit juice

    3 splashes club soda

    Grapefruit Smoothie

    8 oz Orange Juice
    8 ox Grapefruit Juice
    Frozen Strawberries
    Frozen Blueberries
    1 Over-ripe Banana

    Blend until smooth and enjoy

    Squeeze 1-2 grapefruits then place chicken tenderloins into marinate overnight.
    Fire up the grill and cook the chicken until done.
    Squeeze 1 grapefruit add a little Italian dressing or your fave vinaigrette. salt & pepper and brush onto cooked chicken, make a salad use the grapefruit/vinaigerette for your dressing with pine nuts fresh grapefruit slices & mixed greens!!

    Grapefruit Salsa- 1 whole grapefruit peeled & sectioned, 1 cucumber diced, 1 onion diced, 1 tomato diced, 1/2 jalapeno diced, 1 garlic clove diced, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. pepper, 1 tsp cilantro- add all ingredients to bowl & cover. Refrigerate 1-2 hours. Great over salmon with cous cous!

    4 cups romaine lettuce
    3/4 cup blue cheese crumbled
    1 teaspoon salt

    Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing

    I make super delicious smoothies with grapefruit juice. I use 2-3 bananas, 5-7 strawberries, handful of blueberries, a few blackberries, and a cup or two of grapefruit juice and some ice. Best smoothie ever! Sometimes I throw some spinach in there to benefit even more.

    for all Ladies: Ruby Red Cocktail!!!

    1 1/2 cups grapefruit juice
    1 1/2 cups plain seltzer
    1/2 cup gin
    2 tablespoons Campari
    Ice cubes
    Grapefruit wedges or slices for garnish
    PREPARATION
    Stir grapefruit juice, seltzer, gin and Campari together in a pitcher.
    Fill 4 glasses with ice and top with the cocktail mixture. Garnish with grapefruit.

    Mix 4 parts fresh squeezed grapefruit juice with 1 part of your favorite vodka & ice in mixing tin. Take a highball glass and run a slice of grapefruit around the rim (to wet). Then, dip the rim lightly in salt. Pour the liquids into the glass and serve! Yumm!

    My favorite grapefruit recipe is actually a Publix Apron recipe. Broiled grapefruit, a great alternative to eating a fatty dessert.

    Ingredients
    2 grapefruit
    2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
    2 teaspoons sugar, divided
    2 tablespoons cinnamon sugar, divided

    Prep

    Preheat broiler.
    Slice each grapefruit in half. Remove center core; slice between each segment.
    Steps

    1.Place grapefruit, cut side up, in shallow baking dish. Press 1 1/2 teaspoons butter into center of each grapefruit half (where core was removed). Sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon sugar, then 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon sugar.
    2.Place on top shelf under broiler; broil 4–5 minutes or until sugar is bubbling and edges of grapefruit begin to brown. Serve warm.

    This looks like an awesome recipe. You get most of all your food groups in this recipe with a little zing in it! Who doesn’t love asian cooking and cilantro? I am a cilantro fanatic so I can’t wait to use my $2 coupon to get some grapefruit and didn’t we see the shrimp on sale a few weeks ago? Maybe it will come back to make an awesome deal on this asian salad!

    Southeast Asian Shrimp Grapefruit Salad

    1-1/2 pounds raw shrimp in shells
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    3 tablespoons fish sauce
    1 tablespoon granulated sugar
    juice of 2 limes
    6 cups lettuce washed and dried
    2 grapefruit peeled and sectioned and each section cut in half.
    1/4 cup chopped mint
    1/4 cup chopped cilantro shopping list
    1/8 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes
    1/2 cup chopped dry roasted peanuts

    Put shrimp in saucepan with salted water to cover then bring to boil and turn off heat.
    Allow to sit 5 minutes then cool in refrigerator or under cold running water then peel.
    Combine fish sauce with 2 tablespoons water, sugar and lime juice then whisk until smooth.
    Arrange lettuce on 4 plates then top each portion with a few grapefruit pieces.
    Add some shrimp, mint and cilantro then drizzle with dressing.
    Sprinkle with the minced chilies and chopped peanuts.

    Pretty n Pink Punch: 32oz Ruby Red grapefruit juice, 32oz cranberry or pomegrate juice, 32oz ginger ale, 1 small jar marachino cherries (include juice). Cherrys with stems are very pretty floating in the punch bowl!

    My favorite use for grapefruit is gin and juice.

    1 part gin
    1 part orange juice
    2 parts fresh squeezed grapefruit juice
    Garnish with a slice of lime.

    Make the drink big enough, and it will require half a cup ;)

    Don’t quote me on this, but I do believe that grapefruit is always recommended in your diet (losing weight diet) because it also contains something that curbs hunger….or maybe satisfies hunger. Just a thought. Look it up if you want more info….But my mother turned me on to cottage cheese and grapefruit when I was 5 (1979)while she attended weight watchers (and I don’t think my mother has ever weighed over 125…which might have been her heaviest!!!) Anyway. I still eat it for breakfast, and having a grapefruit tree in the back yard doesn’t hurt….I add granola, or even just grape nuts for fiber…but plain and just segmented is the best!

    I love love love chicken salad sandwiches, so this is a grapefruit version:

    1 lb thin-sliced boneless skinless chicken tenderloins, marinated overnight with Weber black peppercorn marinade mix.

    Grill the chicken and chop into bite-sized pieces.

    Add in:
    1/2 cup nonfat greek yogurt
    1/2 cup mayo
    1/2 T seasonall
    1/2 cup finely chopped grapefruit
    1/2 cup finely chopped red grapes
    3 slices finely chopped swiss cheese slices

    Mix well and serve on a lightly toasted sandwich thin with a lettuce leaf and slice of tomato.
    Enjoy!

    This is a recipe that I am requested to bring to the 4th of july BBQ EVERY YEAR! It is called drunken grapefruit salad and the recipe is as follows
    Ingredients: 8 cups of white and pink grapfruit
    1/4 cup of granulated sugar
    3 fl oz of gin
    8 fresh mint leaves minced
    8 whole mint leaves
    1/2 cup grapefruit juice
    Mix the grapefruit, grapefruit juice and sugar in a bowl until the sugar dissolves. Put the mixture into individual dixie cups, the small ones. Sprinkle minced mint leaves onto tops and garnish with whole mint leaves! Enjoy

    I just made these for a neighborhood oyster roast!

    Grapefruit Bites

    1 whole Grapefruit (cut in 1/2 and section out all of the halved segments)
    2 oz. goat cheese
    5 Tbs. honey
    16 slices Chibatta Bread – sliced thin, toasted, halved (or use boxed mini toasts)
    8 slices Genoa Salami – cut in quarters
    Fresh cracked black pepper

    Mix the goat cheese and 1/2 the honey. Spread lightly on the toast sections. Top with a quarter of salami and one segment of grapefruit. Drizzle remaining honey over all of the bread bites. Finish with cracked black pepper on the top!

    These were a huge hit. So different and classy.

    Grapefruit Salad Note: I would drop the white grapefruit and use only the Ruby Red and add a fresh mint leave for garnish. This salad has all the great tastes I like.

    Ingredients

    3 red grapefruit
    3 white grapefruit
    2 oranges
    1 tablespoon brown sugar
    1/4 cup grated fresh coconut
    1/4 cup chopped macadamia nuts

    Directions

    Cut the ends off the grapefruit and oranges and stand upright. Cut away the remaining skin and membrane, exposing the fruit. Cut between the membranes to release the sections. Combine the fruit sections in a bowl and gently toss with the brown sugar and coconut. Arrange on individual plates and sprinkle with macadamia nuts.

    Perserved Grapefruit with Mint Sugar Syrup
    5 lbs Grapefruit
    1 C. Sugar
    1/4 C. Packed Fresh Mint Sprigs (Plus 1 small sprig for each jar)

    Peel and segment the grape fruit. The easiest way to do this is to cut the top and bottom off, and then follow the lines of the fruits with your knife around the sides to remove the peel. Then carefully slice within each membrane of the fruit to remove fruit segments. Note: This takes a lot of time and patience! Unless you’re some master fruit segmented or something.
    As you work, collect as much juice from the grapefruit into a measuring cup as you can. Ideally, we’re looking for 2 cups of juice. I only got 1 1/2 cups and topped the rest off with water.
    Once all your fruit is segmented, place the grapefruit juice into a medium sauce pan along with the sugar and mint. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally, until all the sugar is dissolved. Then, strain out the mint leaves.
    Quickly, and carefully, pack sterilized jars with grapefruit segments. Pour the boiling syrup into each jar leaving a 1/4 inch headspace.
    Process in a hot water bath canner for 5 minutes.

    Grilled Grapefruit Chicken

    • 2 pink grapefruits
    • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 1 tablespoon honey
    • 1/4 cup olive oil
    • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
    • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, sliced in half horizontally

    We tried this recipe last week and it was awesome and easy!

    Juice one grapefruit into a liquid measure. On the second grapefruit, cut out the wedges. Place these wedges in a medium saute pan. Squeeze the remaining flesh and membranes of the grapefruit to release any juice into a bowl. Add the sugar and honey. Whisk to combine, then taste. If needed, add a teaspoon or more brown sugar to take away the tart of the grapefruit. Pour half of the mixture into a saute pan with the grapefruit wedges. Bring to a simmer and cook until liquid is reduced and slightly thickened, about 8 minutes.

    To the remaining half add the oil, 1 teaspoon salt, and a few grinds of black pepper. Whisk to combine and pour into a plastic bag. Add the chicken, seal and toss a bit before resting on the counter for 25 to 30 minutes. Cook’s Note: Any longer and the acid in the grapefruit juice will “cook” the chicken in the marinade and ruin it.

    Take chicken out of the marinade and cook on hot grill or grill pan if you don’t have a grill. Remove to a serving plate and pour the grapefruit sauce over the top.

    We halfed the recipie for our family of 2 adults and 2 toddlers. We served over jasmine rice and had a side salad for adults and cut veggies for kids. No leftovers!

    My husband and I also eat a grapefruit everyday with lunch… helps curb cravings and keeps us on track for losing the rest of baby and sympathy baby weight :)

    Now you can have grapefruit goodness without the peels and when they are out of season! I use a big stock pot to do the water bath so it does not even require any expensive equipment.

    I’ll be honest… my favorite Grapefruit recipe is one grapefruit, chilled and cut into individual squares. Eat and Enjoy. Simple and so yummy. No cooking required. :) Oh yes, you must squeeze after to create fresh grapefruit juice (drink in a cup or out of the fruit).

    Scottish Grapefruit Poppy Seed Bunt Cake…. My gram’s favorite.. I’m not a huge fan of grapefruit. But this is so good.. And I will pass it on to you, And I will pass it on to my kids..
    175g butter , softened, plus extra for the tin
    300g plain flour , plus a little extra for dusting
    300g caster sugar
    3 large eggs
    1 tsp vanilla extract
    1½ tsp baking powder
    225ml soured cream
    zest 2 grapefruit , plus 3 tbsp juice
    4 tsp poppy seeds , toasted

    To Make Icing….

    100 sugar
    25g butter
    zest 1 grapefruit , plus 4 tbsp juice

    Instead of using lemon, 1/2 cup of pink grapefruit slices in a foil pack with salmon.
    Place a piece of salmon on the center of a piece of aluminum foil. Drizzle olive oil on top and sprinkle garlic powder, black pepper and some cayanne. Top with a generous portion of pink grapefruit slices and wrap up the foil pack so that no air can escape.
    Cook at 375 for about 20 minutes.
    Be careful when you open the foil pack, the steam will be hot!
    Remove salmon from foil pack and place on top of a serving of brown rice. Pour juices from foil pack on top of salmon and rice.
    ENJOY!

    Zesty Citrus Chicken

    Squeeze fresh Florida grapefruit or orange over a whole chicken.

    Place grapefruit or orange halves inside chicken, then season with salt, pepper and garlic powder.

    Roast at 400F. Cook chicken 15 minutes per pound until fully cooked.

    Simple and delicious!

    3 oz. gin (I use bourbon, but it calls for gin ;-)

    Fresh mint – whole leaves and minced

    Mix grapefruit, 1/2 cup juice & sugar until sugar dissolves. Put in individual serving cups (about 8). Sprinkle with 1 tsp gin & mint.

    Favorite recipe has to be ‘Grapefruit au naturale’. Cut a grapefruit in half along its equator. Take the kitchen shears and cut around the center to open the segments. Place the half in a pretty glass bowl, grab a small spoon and dish out the segments. When segments are gone, scrape against the membranes for final spoons full of juice.

    With modern grapefruit no sugar or other additives are needed for a tasty fruit treat and it is simple enough to enjoy this way that prep is no hindrance to having grapefruit as part of breakfast or a snack.

    Can’t help it – we just like to peel them and eat the sections, preferably after they have been in the fridge for a while.

    I’ve also added cut sections to a fruit salad with orange sections, apples and raisins.

    Oatmeal Grapefruit Quick Bread (allrecipes.com)
    3 C flour
    1/2 tsp salt
    4 tsp baking powder
    3/4 tsp baking soda
    2/3 C honey
    1/4 C butter or margarine, softened
    1 & 2/3 C rolled oats
    1 egg
    1 & 1/4 C grapefruit juice
    1 C chopped walnuts

    1. Preheat oven to 350*.
    2. Sift flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
    3. Mix honey and butter until creamy.
    4. Add honey butter to flour mixture, and stir in oats, egg, grapefruit juice,
    and walnuts. Mix well, until smooth.
    5. Pour mixture into a lightly greased 9×5″ loaf pan.
    6. Bake at 350* for 1 hour (or so).

    I’m pretty sure I could just as easily go for Fort Myers’ “Grapefruit au naturale” though!

    Salty Chihuahua Cocktails
    8 cups red grapefruit juice (or about 12 freshly squeezed grapefruits)
    1 1/2 cups silver tequila
    3/4 cup Cointreau (orange-flavored liqueur)
    1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
    Ice cubes
    Lime slices
    1. Combine juice, tequila, and liqueur; stir well. Coat rim of each glass with salt. Fill each glass with ice and pour 1 cup juice mixture into each glass. Garnish each glass with a lime slice, Enjoy!

    Spring smoothie

    1 ruby red grapefruit seeded and wedged
    1 ripe banana
    1/2 blood orange seeded and wedged
    1/8 tsp fresh lemon zest
    1/8 tsp fresh orange zest
    1/2 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
    pinch of splenda or sugar

    Blend all ingredients. Serve over ice.

    I enjoy this because it has pulp and is very refreshing!

    Fruit Salad With a Twist recipe:

    1 Ruby Red grapefruit – peeled, segmented, and chopped

    1 large navel orange – peeled, segmented, and chopped

    2 Granny Smith apples – peeled, cored, and diced

    1 (15 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained (juice reserved)

    1 (10 ounce) jar maraschino cherries, drained and halved

    1 cup grapes, halved

    2 bananas, sliced

    1/2 cup sweetened flaked coconut

    1/2 cup chopped walnuts

    1 teaspoon white sugar, or more to taste

    Directions:
    Mix grapefruit, orange, apples, pineapple, maraschino cherries, and grapes in a large bowl. Mash slightly with the back of a wooden spoon to release juices. Add bananas, coconut, walnuts, and sugar; stir to coat. Cover and refrigerate to blend flavors, at least 1 hour.

    Love this to add relish to my meat or inside of tacos and such. The avocados go great with the grapefruit!

    Avocado-Grapefruit Relish

    Ingredients
    1 large seedless grapefruit
    1/2 avocado, diced
    1 small shallot, minced
    1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
    1 teaspoon red-wine vinegar
    1 teaspoon honey

    Directions
    1. With a sharp knife, remove the peel and white pith from grapefruit and discard. Cut the grapefruit segments from the surrounding membrane, letting them drop into a bowl. Add avocado, shallot, cilantro, vinegar and honey. Toss well to combine.

    Section 2 grapefruit (removing the skin as well)
    Do the same with 3 oranges
    Squeeze juice from pulp with your hand
    Add 1/2 cup shredded coconut
    Add 1/2 jar marachino cherries and a bit of juice
    Mix it all together and enjoy!

    This is easy and delicious! We have it every Christmas with dinner!

    For each serving, toss 2 cups greens with 2 tablespoons dressing, top with 4 cherry tomatoes, 1 sliced pork chop, 1/2 avocado, sliced in wedges, 1/2 nectarine sliced in wedges, 1/4 grapefruit segments. Drizzle with more dressing and sprinkle with toasted almonds. Serve immediately.

    I’m not a huge grapefruit lover, but my husband will almost trample you to get to one. Last year we went on vacation to Maryland. We stopped half way up at a sweet bed and breakfast. The lady was from England and she served baked grapefruit for breakfast. We’d never had it, but it was REALLY good! She said you take the grapefruit, cut it in half, and bake at 350 until it starts to just sag a little. She served it hot with french toast, bacon, eggs, and a wonderful blend of citrus juices. We LOVED IT!!! I can still taste it! So easy, so yummy, and great memories!

    I make a great grapefruit cake, the easy way. I use a box of yellow cake mix and instead of all the water I use half grapefruit juice. For the frosting I make a quick glaze using grapefruit juice and powder sugar and zesting the graoefruit I use a tablespoon of zest. For the middle layer after I frost it I put 1 hole grapefruit of sections around the cake then put the top layer on and use about a half grapefruit of sections to form a pretty grapefruit star on the top.

    Last week I bought 2 bottles of the Simply Grapefruit juice instead of fresh grapefruits. I have been making a drink using 1/2 c. grapefruit juice and 1/2 c. of Sprite zero over ice. And I made “Cranberry orange muffins” but replaced the orange juice with grapefruit juice. They are really delicious.

    I also made a marinade for boneless pork chops using 1/4 c. soy sauce, 1/2 c. grapefruit juice, 1/4 c. veg. oil, 1/2 tsp. ground ginger, 1/4 tsp. garlic powder, dash salt and pepper. Marinate pork chops for at least 1 hour or longer, then bake in oven at 350 until done (depends upon thickness of pork chops) but usually 30 minutes works for me. I serve with wild rice and green beans.

    Ingredients
    2 grapefruits
    2 1/2 cups of sugar
    2 cups packed brown sugar
    2 lemons, juice of or 6 tablespoons bottled lemon juice

    Directions:
    In a large pot, place the two grapefruit in just enough water to make them float freely. Bring to a boil, and let boil for about two hours or until you can easily pierce the flesh with a fork (add water from a kettle if too much boils away and the grapefruit touch the bottom). Drain the grapefruit, discard water and let fruit cool. Slice the grapefruit as finely as possible. Place the grapefruit, sugars and lemon juice back into the pot, and dissolve the sugars on low heat. Bring to a boil and let bubble until you reach the jell point, about 15 minutes. Ladle into clean, sterilized jars and process in a hot water bath for ten minutes.

    My kids and I love making “fresh fruity freezies” with juice including 100% Florida Grapefruit juice. We use 1/2 cup 100% Florida Grapefruit juice, 1/2 cup 100% Florida orange juice and 1/2 cup pineapple juice. Mix it all together in a pitcher then pour it into an ice tray. Put a layer of plastic wrap over the top and stick toothpicks or wooden kebob sticks through the plastic into the juice. Pop in the freezer and in a few hours you have a refreshing frozen treat thats great for us! The grapefruit juice is an excellent addition because it cuts the sweetness of the pineapple juice. Delicious!

    You need: 1 grapefruit segmented, 1/4 of a small red onion minced, 2 rough chopped ripe avacados, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon cilantro finely chopped.
    Place onions on a chopping board after mincing, and add 1/2 of the salt and sprinkle salt onto onions and squeeze to remove liquid. rinse with cold water & place in sieve and squeeze out any excess liquid.     6 pink grapefruits washed
    1 cup granulated sugar
    1 tablespoon lemon juice
    After washing grapefruit use a zester or peeler to remove the zest of one grapefruit and chop coarsley. Next ina blender c ombine sugar and zest and blend until zest is very finely chopped.     My favorite recipe is the one my grandpa taught me. Simply cut a grapefruit in half and sprinkle with lots of sugar. Dig in with a spoon! I can’t bear to eat one any other way because of how it brings back great childhood memories of time spent with my grandpa!

    4 grapefruits juiced
    3/4 cup sugar
    1 teaspoon lemon juice
    Mix well and fill ice cube trays & freeze. Pop out and use fork to crush and enjoy. Best slushie I ever had.

    i make fruit milkshake with any kind of fruits. this one i would put grapefruit without seeds and put in the blender with vanilla ice cream or peach ice cream and put a bit of cold milk and blender them as smooth or creamy .so good milkshake. you can make your own milkshakes with any kind of fruits.

    i make grapefrit and grape juice combined in punch bowls when i have guests over.i would put a can of frozen grape juice and 1 or two can of grapefruit juice in punch bowl. cut up fresh grapefruits and get rid of seeds and drop the grapefruits in fruit bowl. i also cut slices of oranges to put them on top of juices just for pretty presentation in punch bowl.

    I cut up 1 whole grapefruit aftr I peel it. Put grapefruit into a sauce pan and add toasted pecans and schllots. Saute for 5to7 minutes. Add to any salad or rotasted chicken, I may try it on porkchops next.

    1 avcado chopped
    1 tablespoon ime juice
    your favorite dressing
    In a large bowl combine lettuce, grapefruit, avacado and lime juice. Lightly toss with your favorite dressing.

    1 avacado cut into bite sized pieces
    1 grapefruit peeled use only membrane
    1 mangp cut into bite sized pieces
    juice of one half lime
    squeeze the lime and reserve the juice
    In a large bowl combine avacado, grapefruit, and mango then pour reserved lime over toss and you are ready to serve.
