Stamp Out Hunger Today 5/12
May 12, 2012
I thought I would give you guys a reminder….today is the day to put out your donation!
The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, held on the second Saturday in May, has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive benefitting Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. In 2011, generous Americans donated 70.2 million pounds of food, which marked the eighth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected by letter carriers.
On Saturday, May 12th, simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, like canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal, next to your mailbox before the time of regular mail delivery. Your letter carrier will then collect the donations and deliver them to food banks and pantries in the local community. Make sure that food items are in non-breakable containers, such as boxes and cans.

I wish they did this more often than once a year. We get so many free and cheap deals that it is nice to give them away. I do not have a food pantry in our town, the closest is about 30 miles away.
This is a stupid way to get this done. Letter carriers have a much toougher job than anyone who leaves a bag of goods at their mailbox thinks. There should be places that folks can donate anytime, like when they have a little extra money one week, some really great coupons another week…whatever. I’m sure food banks could arrange for volunteers to pick-up at local grocery stores, a little planning goes a long way. Heck, grocers could even take the initiative and then work it to their advantage in advertising.

I was able to donate some items yesterday, it felt really good to help others!
