Hurst Family Harvest Review & Giveaway

I have mentioned before that I am a huge fan of dried beans. They are so versatile, easy to cook and very economical!
There is no reason to be intimidated by dried beans. It is almost impossible to mess them up! All you need is a bag of beans, water, a little seasoning and you can make a wonderful meal or side dish with very little effort. Hurst Family Harvest makes it super simple to create meals that your family will love!
The folks over at Hurst Family Harvest were kind enough to send me some of their beans to try out. I have been just thrilled with all of their varieties. What I love about the Hurst Family Harvest beans is that they give you beans and include a flavor packet that is all natural (no artificial flavors or preservatives). All of their packages come with a great recipe suggestion on the bag to help you make a perfect meal for your family.
While I cook beans year round, I have a tendency to make more in the fall and winter. There is something about a big pot of beans that just warms you up. Things also tend to be a bit more hectic this time of the year. With the holidays just around the corner I will be running like a mad woman. I love being able to take just a few minutes to throw some beans on then let them simmer until I am ready to finish up dinner.
Now, let’s talk about cost. Through 10/21, Hurst Family Harvest beans are on sale at Publix for $1.99 (that’s $1 off the regular price). One big bag of beans is easily 2 meals for a family of four or even more if you serve them as a side dish.
You guys know I like easy one pot meals, so I came up with a fabulous chili recipe that I think you guys are going to love. It is super simple and it is only about $1 per serving….talk about an economical meal!

- Bag of Hurst Family Harvest Bayou Cajun Red Bean Soup
- 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
- 1 Medium Onion Chopped
- 1 Bell Pepper Chopped
- 2 Cloves Garlic Chopped
- 6 Cups of Water
- 1 Bay Leaf
- ½ Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
- ½ Teaspoon Brown Sugar
- 1 Tablespoon Creole Seasoning
- 1 Cajun Smoked Sausage Chopped 16 oz
- 1 Can of Diced Tomatoes 28 oz (or use fresh + 2 cans of tomato sauce)
- 1 Can of Tomato Sauce 8 oz
- 2 Cups Steamed Rice
- Rinse and sort through the beans. Pour beans into a large bowl or pot and cover with 2 inches of warm water. Allow beans to soak over night, or at least 4 hours. Drain and discard water. Set the seasoning packet aside to use later.
- In large pot, heat olive oil and saute the onion, bell pepper and garlic for 5 minutes.
- Add 6 cups of water and Hurst Family Harvest beans to the pot and bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to simmer. Simmer for 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, add Hurst Family Harvest seasoning packet, bay leaf, cayenne pepper, brown sugar, creole seasoning, sausage, tomatoes and tomato sauce.
- Cover and allow to simmer for an hour.
- Serve over steamed rice. Add cheese, sour cream and any other chili fixins that float your boat.
Now I will warn you that this recipe is a bit on the spicy side…but, you can adjust the spice as you prefer. This was not one for my kiddos but boy oh boy, my husband and I loved it!! It was so good that we had it two nights in a row and I even froze some for later! You could actually start this one on the stove and then transfer it to the crockpot and allow to simmer all day.
I have cooked all the Hurst Family Harvest beans and have loved them all. You could easily cook up some of the beans bake up some cornbread and have a meatless meal for pennies per serving! At $1.99 per bag you guys definitely need to stock up on all the varieties!
We all know that cooking whole foods is so much healthier and in this case is actually much cheaper!! So why not ditch the can! Grab a bag of Hurst Family Beans and with just a little effort you have a wholesome meal without preservatives that is good for your family AND your wallet!!

I would love to try them all, but mainly I would love the Split Pea Soup Mix. My son and I are the only ones that really eat soup and with the colder weather heading in it would be great. I always save my ham bone, fat trimmings and extra meat to make a huge pot and freeze it to have throughout the year. Although it only seems to last a month or 2 tops…lol

When my husband was in the Air Force we were stationed in Illinois and loved going to a family owned authentic German restaurant who made the BEST honemade Split Pea Soup. Wow…my family loves beans…just about nothing better than a big old steaming pot of beans cooking on the stove. Growing up we ate beans because it was so economical and we didn’t have a lot of money…and, it was so good for you too. We had various beans at least once a week usually navy, pinto or great northern.
Today, as an adult and head of my home I still cook beans a couple times a month…sometimes I will add a ham bone or hocks…with onion, carrots…thick homemade cornbread and fried potatoes and onion. YUMMO! So, good and nutritious and still economical too. I would love to try all the flavors but especially the Homestyle Tri-Bean Soup. I only wish I had my grannies bean pot!

The Bayou Cojun Red Bean Soup, just remenbered me the delicious red beans soup that my grandmather often cooked for all her 11 grand childs in one little town in Central America. So rich in vitamins and minerals!..I always try to do it to my kids too. In the same way that I enjoyed it when I was a little girl, they enjoyed too!

Split pea! Nothing better on a cool winter day that smelling split pea soup cooking in the kitchen!
This is a tough choice b/c we love beans in our house- but I’m going to go with the Chipotle Lime Black Bean- anything with smoky, yummy chipotle flavor is a winner!
I can’t say that I have a favorite, for I have beans once a week. I do love to add smoked turkey into my southeastern beans. Thanks for giving us a wide veriety to select from.

We love red beans and rice but I have never heard of white bean chili so at that price I get adventurous and am willing to try something new. Where in Publix are the beans? Our Rockledge Fl. is just finished redecorating and I am lost and some of the younguns haven’t got used to their store yet either. Are they with the soups or dried things or ethnic things or healthfood things?

I like the White Chilli Beans add some ham or turkey and slow cook in a crockpot for 2-3 hours and mmmm….add cheese, sourcream and onions and you are good to go.

We are vegetarians so beans are just a regular part of our meals. With our love of Mexican food I think the Chipotle Lime black beans would be the bff for some nachos. Yuuuummmmm

Homestyle Tri-bean Soup sounds wonderful. I can think of a lot of uses for those. Add sausage and some tomatoes. Add chicken. Add some ground beef. Flavored all kinds of ways – although, I am a huge fan of garlic anything. Yum! Yum! Yum!

I’d love to try the white bean chili! I just found the pasta and bean “pasta fagioli” bag from Hurst at the store last week. It’s on the stove as I type. My college student is home and keeps asking WHEN it will be done and ready to eat! Can’t wait to try it!

I have to be honest, I have never tried these beans before but I am always up for a change. My hubby has thought me that living a life without reaching out and taking that chance always leave a person questioning later. I am sure I my family would love them and we proberly would have more beans at the table.

Black Bean
Being one of six kids and watching my parents buy groceries for eight people.. I grew up learning to love beans
of course.. we never had so many wonderful options for flavorings so I’m thinking the red bean cajan one would be my favorite! I love that it has the options for substituting sausage to fresh shrimp, fish, or other seafood… and add chopped okra for the weeks when you have a little “extra” cushion in the coupon budget..lol! Nice way to spend some overage if we can find some!

I grew up in a small coastal town on the California coast but I now live in Georgia! I’m just starting out my adult life and always find myself missing Mom’s cooking. She is a master at cooking soups and beans and she makes a wonderful white bean and chicken chili. I’ve tried to re-create the chili so many times and realize I don’t have Mom’s finesse with seasoning. So I would like to try the Southwestern White Bean Chili with chicken to see how I do! Maybe the Hurst Family Harvest can help me with getting close to Mom’s version that I miss so very much. Thanks for sharing! Warm Regards, Cindy

I liked Hurst Beans & the Split Pea is one of my all time favs. It’s one of those great comfort foods so welcoming in the winter! I would love to win the Publix prize because I just had major surgery & my daughter is unemployed, so it is very badly needed! But whoever wins, congratulations!
