Try Me Tuesday – Publix Deodorant Soap

publix-soapWelcome to this week’s Try Me Tuesday. Each week I will grab a new set of products and test them out. I’ll put the Publix brand up against a national brand product and report back.

I know many times I struggle with what brand to choose. Often a sale or a coupon/sale combination make that an easier decision…but what about those times when you need an item and there is not a sale? Do you grab the house brand or pay more and get the national brand? More importantly, is there really a difference in taste?

This week we are going to talk soap – yep…soap :-) I have yet to move my stockpile. To be honest I am REALLY not looking forward to it. I have a lot of stuff and much of it is very heavy…think canned tomato-o-rama (I use a ton of tomatoes!) So, I just packed a very small box of personal care items to use here at the new house. I grabbed a bar of soap for the master bath and didn’t really think about the type. Ok…so I grabbed a “girly” pink soap. My husband used it for a week or so and then while at Publix with me, decided he needed a more masculine soap.

I saw the Publix brand right beside the Irish Spring he chose and decided it would be a great Try My Tuesday opportunity!

Here are the ingredients…if it helps anyone. Mostly a bunch of stuff I can’t pronounce.

Publix Spring Fresh Deodorant Soap

  • Sodium Tallowate
  • Sodium Cocoate or Sodium Palm/Kernelate
  • Water
  • Glycerine
  • Fragrance
  • Sodium Chloride
  • Tetrasodium EDTA
  • Titanium Dioxide
  • Green 8
  • Green 3

Irish Spring Deodorant Soap

  • Sodium Tallowate
  • Sodium Cocoate or Sodium Palm/Kernelate
  • Water
  • Glycerine
  • Hydrogenated Tallow Acid
  • Coconut Acid
  • Fragrance
  • Sodium Chloride
  • Pentasodium Pentetate
  • Pentaerythrityl
  • Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate
  • Titanium Dioxide
  • D&C Green No 8
  • FD&C Green No 3

Ok now to the testing. I didn’t use the soap but my husband has been alternating the bars when he showers. For the record…yes, my husband thinks I am insane sometimes – but, he happily plays along. He’s is the best guinea pig around ;-)

Smell
Publix Soap – 2
Irish Spring – 0

Use
Publix
Irish Spring
No Difference – 1

This was a hard one. It’s really hard to determine a winner based on the product itself. In a blind “smell test” we both chose the Publix soap. The Irish Spring had a much heavier perfume-type smell. The Publix brand had a “cleaner” smell. When it came to how the soap performed, my husband said he could not tell any difference what so ever.

When it comes down to price there is a clear winner. The Publix brand was 60¢ cheaper- so you save 20¢ per bar when you choose the Publix version. This week since there was not a huge difference in the products, we are going to declare the Publix version the winner because of the price.

Keep in mind…this is just for fun. There is absolutely nothing scientific to my comparisons. My friends and family get to play along and I share the results. No one pays me to write these posts and I do buy the products with my own moolah.
