Publix Frugal Focus – Meat & Seafood Department Perks

old bayEach week I thought it might be fun to focus on one frugal concept. It might be something from the ad, a tip from a reader or really anything. If it has a frugal focus that might help someone…then, I’ll try to feature it.

Today I thought we’d talk about an awesome service that you can get in the Publix Meat/Seafood department. Did you know that they will season many of the products they sell for FREE?  They will even cook your shrimp in your choice of seasonings.

I totally forgot about this until someone reminded me the other day. I first learned about the shrimp when I walked into the store and this delicious smell made my mouth water. Usually it is the smell of bread from the bakery but that day is was the smell of shrimp and Old Bay seasoning. I stopped by the seafood department to ask what they were cooking up and they told me that they were just steaming some shrimp for a customer…for FREE!!

What an awesome way to save time and money. Now, I am not positive all of the seasonings offered but I think they do seasoning such as Old Bay, Cajun, Jerk and Lemon Pepper.

Next time you are stumped with what to cook for dinner stop by the Publix meat and seafood department. Chat a bit with the folks behind the counter and I bet they will come up with some great suggestions. You can grab some precooked, pre-seasoned shrimp that you can toss in a salad or serve over some rice. You won’t have to open your spice cabinet at all ;-)

Being able to feed my family while staying in budget is one of my most important jobs. I have been doing it for a while and at this point and I think I am pretty good at it. Now, that doesn’t mean I know it all – I learn something new everyday! So, that’s where you guys come in. I would love for you guys to send me in any tips, ideas or email me with areas that you need some help.

We will also take a whole piece of meat like a top sirloin or other steak and make stir fry out of it. We will cut up whole chickens for you. We will do whatever it takes to make your shopping experience a pleasure.

When I worked near a Publix, I would go at lunch time and have them steam some shrimp for me w/ old bay and grab a microwavable veggie or a pre-made salad for lunch….
