Reader Spotlight – Graduating From Debt

reader spotlight
Today’s Reader Spotlight comes to us from Shannon. Shannon learned to coupon and is well on her way to paying off her student loan debt!

Take it away, Shannon!

I graduated from college in January 2008, during the peak of the economic crisis. Despite the promise that a college degree would lead to a good job, I couldn’t find full-time work in my field. I bounced from one dead-end job to another, working three part-time jobs to support myself. I lived paycheck to paycheck, had no health insurance, and could barely pay my bills. Suffice it to say, times were tough.

When one of the stores I worked at closed down, I moved back in with my parents as I continued the never-ending search for a full-time job. During this time, I joined Financial Peace University and realized just how important it was for me to get out of debt. I had a huge student loan payment every month, which was a big strain on my finances. Even worse for me was the stress that came from the feeling that it would never end. In the fall of 2010, I was fortunate enough to find an entry level position at a good company, where I still work today. Unfortunately, those student loan bills never seemed to get any lower. In the race against the interest rate, I was losing.

Then one night, I saw a TV show called Extreme Couponing. I was shocked as a woman got over hundreds of dollars worth of groceries for next to nothing. I thought, “Hey… I could do that!” I scoured the internet and learned everything I could about couponing. I clipped, printed and sorted every coupon I could get my hands on. I shopped and shopped, trying to get every deal. And while I was quickly disabused of the notion that 95% savings was commonplace, I was very excited about regularly saving of 65-75% and my rapidly growing stockpile. But even though I loved couponing, I was starting to burn out.

Just when I was about to give up, I found I Heart Publix. I read the encouraging posts from others like me and I breathed a sigh of relief. I’ve learned that the world wouldn’t end if I skipped a deal and that I don’t have to shop at every store in town. Now I shop at only two grocery stores and one pharmacy. I spend less time on shopping and more on enjoying my life. Couponing is fun again! And with the shopping list feature, so much easier!

I’m proud to say that as of now, because of the savings from my grocery budget, I’ve paid 25% of my student loans and was able to buy the best car I’ve ever owned in cash. I have peace of mind, knowing that my stockpile will provide for me and for my family. In addition to eating better than I ever have, I can donate to food banks and was recently able to help my brother stay independent when he found himself in a difficult financial situation.

I would not have been able to do any of that without couponing and I Heart Publix. Thank you, Michelle, Happy and all the wonderful contributors to this site! Your efforts have been a true blessing to me and my family.

Thanks for sharing your story, Shannon!

I could really use a few new volunteers for the Reader Spotlight – so pretty please with a cherry on top…please write in if you have a story to tell! Your post can be about almost anything to do with couponing. You can tell us about a particularly good or bad situation you’ve dealt with as a couponer, about how you got into couponing or how couponing has impacted the rest of your life, you can make a list of things every new couponer should know…just about anything, really! If you think it’s interesting and it has to do with couponing, email me with your idea at contactiheartpublix @ gmail.com.

This is one of my favorite features on the site! Be sure and check out all the past Reader Spotlights HERE.
